For a long time, documentation followed software. Products were designed, built, and shipped. Then documentation came afterward.

That model has already evolved.

What’s changed again (fundamentally) is the environment documentation now lives in.

What does documentation’s new environment actually look like?

Today, documentation exists in an environment shaped by:

  • Rapid system evolution. Software changes faster than documentation can keep up, making maintainability, automation, and docs-as-code practices essential for keeping knowledge aligned with the product.
  • Distributed teams. Documentation has become a key integration point—not just for end users, but for engineering, product, support, and external developers aligning across time zones and organizations.
  • Overwhelming internal knowledge. Information is scattered across wikis, Slack, tickets, code, and legacy docs. Finding the right information at the right time is often harder than creating it.
  • AI-driven consumption. Documentation is increasingly parsed, retrieved, summarized, and reused by AI systems, raising the bar for structure, consistency, and clarity beyond human-only readers.

This shift has everything to do with how information is created, maintained, surfaced, and reused in modern software organizations.

In this context, documentation succeeds or fails not just on how well it explains things, but on how well it holds up over time, connects teams, and supports new ways information is consumed.

This is what it means to document in a new era of software — one defined by scale, distribution, reuse, and increasingly, AI-driven systems interacting with documentation in new ways.
